Prevention And Causes Of Ingrown Hair

By: Mike Jones

When the hair curls around and the tip grows back into the skin this is called ingrown hair. Mostly this problem effects curly-haired men but it affects women also.

Some of the causes of this condition are shaving too closely, tweezing, plucking and waxing. Also a build up of oil and dead skin cells in the pores can irritate the skin and trap the hair. If your skin becomes too dry it can suffer from dehydration and that will cause ingrown hair also.

To prevent ingrown hair there are some techniques that can be used. First of all you will need to wash the area to be shaved before you begin. Once you are done make sure to put lotion or aftershave on the shaved area. Another technique is to let the hair grow a little longer than usual and pluck the hair with a special pair of tweezers.

When waxing you have to be careful of the hair breaking off because this can cause ingrown hair also. You should always pull the hair out from the root. Keeping your skin exfoliated and moisturized will also help to prevent ingrown hair. You may still experience ingrown hair from time to time if you use these methods but hopefully it will lessen the frequency.

The effects of ingrown hair can be very unpleasant. It can cause constant tenderness in the area, or even itching, tingling, and pain in the worst cases. You have to also be careful of scaring from the ingrown hair. If it becomes infected it could form a blister that is full of puss and if the blister ruptures it can lead to scarring.

One home remedy you can try is to take the raw side of a potato pealing and tape it to the area. Keep it on for about twenty four hours and then check it. The starch from the potatoes can help to draw it out faster. Make sure to disinfect the area once the hair has been removed.

Some people prefer to remove the hair themselves. You can grab the side that is embedded in your skin with a pair of tweezers and lift it out, but be sure that you do not pluck the hair. Plucking the hair can cause it to grow back in much deeper than before. If you are having repeated problems with ingrown hair you may want to consult your physician. This may not be a serious life threatening problem but it can be very irritating and painful.
