Is Hair Removal By Laser For You?

By: Mike Jones

Have you ever wondered how hair removal by laser works? In brief, laser hair removal equipment emits a gentle beam of light which goes through the skin and reaches the hair follicle. The hair follicle is disabled when the energy is transformed into heat, thus disabling the mechanism of hair growth.

How does electrolysis compare with laser hair treatment?

Electrolysis can be a tedious, painful process destroying each hair follicle one at a time. This can sometimes require treatment over years at regular intervals.

Hair removal by laser treats hundreds of hair follicles at a time so the process is quicker than electrolysis.

Is laser hair removal for anyone?

Coolglide Technology

It is now possible to use laser hair removal on all skin and hair types with the advent of CoolGlide technology. Of course, each individual can respond differently so a test needs to be done. This is an improvement however over the early days when dark skin and tanned skin greatly impaired the results you could expect.

With CoolGlide's longer wavelength, all skin tones can be treated. It is still true that clients with fair skin can expect much better results. However, studies show that clients with dark or tanned skin can also expect good results in the reduction of unwanted body hair without unpleasant side effects.

Other Laser Hair Removal Devices

For certain laser hair removal equipment to work well, the client must have darker hair than the surrounding skin.

White skin with dark hair responds best. Persons with dark, coarse hair are the easiest to treat as dark hair contains melanin, a dark pigment which attracts the laser light so more laser energy is absorbed. Fewer sessions are needed.

Light colored hair is more difficult to treat and blonde and red hair are very difficult to treat requiring multiple laser hair removal sessions with varied results.

If a person has a diet high in beta-carotene, they will need to change their diet before going for laser hair removal. Beta-carotene is found in carrots, squash and other vegetables. It produces a yellow or orange color and when this is in the skin it interferes with the energy from the laser getting into the hair follicle.

As beta-carotene can remain in the body for months, an adjustment in diet may be needed well in advance of laser hair removal treatment for optimum results.

Persons with light skin are the easiest to treat, requiring less laser hair removal sessions as the results are faster.

Persons with dark skin or sun tanned skin take longer to get results because melanin, the dark pigment in hair, is also present in skin. Melanin absorbs some of the laser light.

To avoid the risk of burning when treating dark skin, a lower energy laser beam is used. It should also be noted that a professional technician with experience is best for this kind of treatment.

So now you have a reasonable overview of what is involved in hair removal by laser. Use this information to prepare for your consultation and see if you will be a suitable candidate for laser hair removal.
