Ways to Pack Your Boxes For a Move

By: Jeffrey Jackson

Boxes protect items nicely during a move. They are very handy because they can keep your items together. While not every single item in your home will be able to be put in a moving box, most items can. Here are a few tips to help when packing.

Start with lighter items. Lighter items can be put into larger moving boxes and they are usually much easier and quicker to pack. Keep out a few towels if you are intending to use them to protect valuables as extra padding.

Heavier items should be packed next. Begin with items such as books, that are not fragile. Starting with books and items that do not need to be wrapped can save you time and your children can easily help out.

Pack heavy items in small boxes. While you might be able to fit everything in to one large box, it will easily become too heavy and be hard to move. It is safer on your back to have to carry a few small boxes as opposed to one huge, heavy one.

Your box should normally never weigh more than 40 pounds. Movers can move 40 pounds with out too much worry, especially if you have more than one mover there to help or professional movers. 40 pounds should be able to be sustained by cardboard boxes. Anything more than that will risk the box breaking.

If the movers cannot lift the boxes because they are too heavy, that is a sign to remove the contents from the box and place them into smaller boxes. Another option would be to use a dolly to wheel the box out to the moving truck. Professional movers have this type of equipment on hand when they move items out of your home.

Precious items should be packed last. This will give them last chance to break, and remind you to handle them with more care. You can even specify certain boxes that you would like to take with you in your car, such as family photo albums or important documents.

Do not forget to label your moving boxes. Keep your items organized before the move so you do not have chaos in your new home. It may be a good idea to label the boxes according to the rooms they are normally placed so you can put the boxes there and unpack them one at a time.
