Ingrown hairs are common but not serious at all. You will probably leave the odd case alone to heal itself but a serious case can be very irritating and even painful. Ingrown hairs cause the skin to swell as well as become red and itchy. A small pimple may develop if there is an infection. Here are some ingrown hair treatment options:
The skin should be soft when you treat the ingrown hairs. The skin is at it's softest after a bath or shower. You can also use a warm face cloth and hold it on the skin to moisten and warm the skin and make it soft. The ingrown hair should become more visible.
Use a needle or tweezer that has been sterilized and carefully nudge the hair until it breaks through the skin. You should not have to cut the skin. If it does not come out then try these other treatment options.
Gently exfoliate the area with a soft brush, loofah or sponge. You want to free the hair gently. You should not rub too hard. You do not want to worsen the irritation. You can exfoliate your skin naturally with a mixture of one cup brown sugar and three teaspoons of honey. It is a good idea to exfoliate on a regular basis to prevent ingrown hairs from appearing.
Apply benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid to the inflamed area a few times a day. These are the active ingredients found in most acne medications. These ingredients help to exfoliate the skin and open the pores by removing dead skin cells and any dirt or oils that might be preventing the hair from growing out. They also help to reduce the inflammation. If you prefer a more natural approach use tea tree oil or witch hazel.
You want to make sure that the skin is not irritated further so do not shave or wax until the skin has calmed down and wear loose clothing.
Keep ingrown hairs at bay by ensuring the skin is cleansed, moisturized and exfoliated regularly. Use a good moisturizer that does not clog the pores. Shaving is often the lead cause of ingrown hairs. You can avoid getting ingrown hairs after shaving if you keep from shaving the hair too close to the skin. Do not push down too hard on the razor and shave hair in the direction of hair growth. Also, try not to pull the skin tight while shaving and don't shave twice in the same area.
